Row by Row Quilt... in 3 days I hope.

Well, here is my project for the next few days.  I fell in love with this quilt featured on the cover of the Feb. 2011 American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine and immediately went out, bought the materials, cut it all out and stored it ready to go.

One year and 3 months later I decide that I have to have it completed... in 3 days. My deadline is inspired by the fact  that I am picking up 2 quilts from my long arm girl on Thursday and I figure that I can just hand this one over for her to start on.  She doesn't live close to me so getting together has to be coordinated and planned.

My quilt is done with the It's a Hoot Jelly Roll by MoMo for Moda. I thought that this was a quilt that I could do in blocks (therefore not requiring the layout I have on my floor) but to no avail it must be sew one entire row at a time and then assembled.  Needless to say that I am not going to pick these pieces up off my floor either (took me 2 hours to lay it out), so I an highly motivated to get it done as I have stamp club here at my house on Friday!

I'll post my daily progress, so let's hope I can finish on time!

Cute Idea for Sweet Sixteen Quilt

Today my friend Marci and I finished up her daughter's quilt that was started at her 16th birthday party.  Marci had Kelsi's friends write (with fabric markers) on some squares of fabric a sentiment or well wishes for her 16th birthday.  We then fused those onto black squares of fabric and put them into this quilt.  Marci let her daughter pick out the fabric for the quilt and she chose Lost and Found by My Mind's Eye for Riley Blake Designs. It is hard to tell in these pictures, but the fabric has a great vintage feel to it.

We really didn't have a pattern, we cut 8 1/2" blocks, sewed them together, then put borders around.  Quick and easy.  This is something that Kelsi will cherish for many years to come!

Use Your Paper Scraps For Collage Cards

I just can't throw away anything that may be of use to me sometime in the future.  I save my paper scraps and my fabric scraps as though they are gold.  And sometimes they are.

These collage cards are easy to make, and they use up your paper scrap stash to create stunning cards.

I purchase 8 1/2" x 11" full sheet labels. These can be found at any office supply store.  I cut them into quarters so I now have 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" sheets.  Pull of the backing and you are left with a sticky surface.  I start placing scraps any which way until the sticky paper is covered. Then I trim the edges off, or die cut the piece into a shape, and mount on to cards!

A change of plans.

I am sure that if you are a sewer, at some point in your sewing life you've bought fabric for one project and then decided to use it for something else.  I bought this fabric called Razzmatazz  by Exclusively Quilters back in the fall to do a French Braid quilt.  Well, after completing a French Braid quilt out of some other fabric I decided that one French Braid Quilt in my life was enough so I had to find something else to do with this fabric.

I choose a simple pattern by Villa Rosa Designs called Sunsprite.  I cut it out one day, put it together the next.  This is going to be a functional quilt that I will use as a throw in my family room.  I of course had to make it bigger than the original pattern.  I just kept cutting squares til I ran out of fabric.  I am taking it to my long arm girl today along with a Christmas Tree Skirt I will share later,

These were supposed to be Christmas gifts.

I seem to be sewing on a lot of Christmas fabric these days.  4 months later than planned.  I think that now that the pressure is off to complete, I am more in the mood to sew Christmas gifts.  I bought lots of fabric to make these adorable Pot Handlers pot holders for gifts, but never even got the fabric cut.  So I'll be ahead of the game for Christmas 2012.

The pattern is called Pot Handlers by Tiger Lily Press.  There are 4 variations in the pattern, and with some creativity the possibilities are endless.  I am really critical about patterns, so I always make the pattern according to directions first, then see if there are any shortcuts that can be made.  The instructions for this pattern are excellent!  Instead of using the template provided for the curved edge, I used a plate and my rotary cutter.  I also sewed the binding on by hand instead of the suggested gluing. Other than that I followed the instructions to a T!

I also made one using the Spice Cake Designer Fabric from Stampin' Up!  I love these colors and they will look great in my kitchen year round.

The almost completed Rag Quilt

Back on this Blog post I mentioned the Rag Quilt I was trying to complete after 1 year of sitting in my To Do pile. This is one of those projects where I go "hmmm, just what was I thinking." When I saw a finished Rag Quilt sample in a quilt store it looked so simple and quick.  After all. it is a quilt as you go project... but I am to the point now where all I have to do is snip the edges to rag it, and I am overwhelmed.  It may take me days, weeks, months to get all this snipping done. Maybe I will just leave it out and invite any and all guests to my house to pick up the scissors and snip a block for me out of pity.

I also spent an excess amount of time designing the pattern of this "random" quilt.  I am a Type A personality so all the colors had to be balanced and no 2 blocks of similar pattern could touch each other.  Needless to say, there are some touching blocks that occurred when I sewed my block wrong and I had to just get over it.

At least I have the correct tool for the job.  A fellow quilter told me a "must have" tool for Rag Quilts are the Fiskars Rag Snip Quilt Scissors. They are spring loaded so your hand doesn't get as tired.

This is a project that I just want to be done with! And did I mention that I had to make it bigger than the original pattern because bigger is always better..... Ugh!

Take Note Stamp Class

I am always attracted to anything that helps me get organized.  This class is a remake of a class I did several years ago using the metal DVD tins.  I like the clear plastic much better!  IF you want more information about the class just shoot me an e-mail.  I am offering the class at my house on Tuesday April 24th, or I have an in the mail option.

This monogram note class is perfect for gift giving, or just to keep for yourself.  Class contains 1 set (you choose which one you want to make) Personalized Notebook, bookmark, & set of 6 cards (2 each of 3 designs) Inside each notebook is a Jr. Legal pad, calendar, pocket for misc stuff, and a mechanical pencil.

The pocket is created using a technique that Dawn Griffith put in a tutorial many years ago.  Here is the link to her original video on how to do it.

Enjoy!
